If you have been looking into teaching English in Asia, chances are you have come across jobs available in South Korea. Korea is known for having the best teaching opportunities in Asia. Teaching in Korea offers great packages and incentives to their EFL teachers. If you want to teach abroad, definitely consider Korea.
All teaching positions in Korea offer free accommodations, free round-trip airfare, and one of the best salaries available anywhere. You can teach in either public or private schools, in cities or more rural areas. Korea’s need for English teachers is massive, so opportunities abound.
To teach in Korea you will need a degree in any subject area. You won’t need any teaching experience, however, and there are a lot of companies that can help you find a job. When you start teaching, you will be given a free and furnished apartment, and your salary will be in the range of $2,500 USD. Your money will go much farther in Korea than in other Asian countries, so you have the opportunity to save a lot of your money and also travel.
Since Korea is not a vastly popular tourist destination for westerners, you will be an object of interest. It also pays to have an American accent, as this type of accent is in high demand and they are willing to pay extra for it.
Schools tend to run Monday to Friday with weekends and evenings free. Expect to work about 30 hours a week and have classes that range from 15-30 students. You will have up to two weeks paid vacation as well as get all the national holidays off. There are about 10-15 national holidays throughout the year.
If you want to make a bit of money on the side, remember that the school you are working for essentially “owns” your work visa and that you are therefore prohibited by law to work outside of it.
