Shopping for an Air Mattress

An air mattress is similar to a standard bed mattress, but instead of layers of batting and coils it is filled with air.  The most common inflatable mattress is one that is convenient for camping or for family visits on holidays where traditional beds may be in short supply.  It provides a comfortable night’s sleep and can be set up and taken down easily. At the higher end of the market are air mattresses that are a permanent part of the bedroom furniture.  These are deluxe mattresses that can be adjusted for various comfort levels.  Air mattresses are available in standard bed sizes much the same as  as single/twin, double/full, queen, and king mattress sets in the traditional  bedding world.

For those who like a firm mattress a higher air pressure is best.  The lower the pressure the softer the mattress will be.  Hand pumps can inflate a mattress, but it will take longer and require more elbow grease than an electric pump.  With an electric pump the mattress can also be deflated faster than if the air is removed manually.  Consider style when deciding whether you will need a manual or electric pump.  The simplest and smallest mattress has but one layer of air and lies directly on the ground or floor.  It resembles a swimming pool float and would be easy to inflate with a hand pump.  Other models raise the sleeping surface, making them easier to get in and out.  This extra volume of air is better handled by the use of an electric pump.

Punctures sometimes happen with an air mattress, but they are easily managed if a patch kit is kept on hand.  Other accessories that simplify the use of these mattresses include special sheets and covers, rapid inflators, and with some models, a carrying case.  Inflatable pillows are also available. Check out online camping equipment sites or visit online department stores that have sporting goods sections to determine which type is best for you.
