Being a parent today is probably tougher than it has ever been. Kids grow up so fast and want sometimes want to experience more than is necessarily good for them. A case in point is their wish to watch movies that are unsuitable for their age group or that you feel is just inappropriate for them as individuals. The problem is made more difficult because it is so easy for kids to download Resident Evil Afterlife online for free, or any movie for that matter, and as parents we can’t be expected to know the rating of every movie that is ever released. What we have to do then, is find a way to come to an agreement with the children about these issues.
This is how we made things work:
A. We sat down with our kids and found out as much as we could about the system for rating movies. We all knew what the ratings stood for, but not really much about how the decision was made to give a movie one of the ratings. Once we’d researched this, it helped all of us understand why a certain movie was restricted and was not suitable for children.
B. As parents, we now never say no to them watching a movie without first doing our own research on the movie they want to watch. This has 2 effects, first it means that sometimes we find out that a movie is not as bad as it is portrayed and we can let them watch it – they love it when this happens. Second, when a movie is unsuitable, we can argue our case from a position of strength – they hate it when this happens but they respect the decision.
You have to remember that just because your kids are able to watch a free movie online, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will without you being involved. To get to that level though, takes a bit of work and lots and lots of talking.
