Making your own masquerade mask is a fun and easy craft project to do at work or school, with friends, or with the kids at home. With a variety of materials such as feathers, glitter or sequins and the endless amount of possibilities, you can allow your creativity and imagination to take over. You can design masks inspired by your favorite animal or in your favorite color.
You can find most of the materials needed to make a mask at your local craft supply store. Some of the most common materials used include cloth, feathers, sequins and glitter. You will need to purchase a hot glue gun if you do not have one already as well as wooden dowels at least 1/4 inch thick. You can also purchase plain pre-cut plastic masks which will make it easier to glue your materials onto rather than starting from scratch and making one on your own.
If you do choose to make the mask on your own, you can do so in a few ways. The simplest way is to simply trace and cut out a pattern from a piece of cardboard. You can find patters on the internet or you can draw your own. Masks for women usually follow the cat eye design which covers the forehead and eyebrows while masks for men usually include coverage on the nose and upper part of the cheeks.
To decorate your masks, you should first glue the wooden dowel to the mask. You can either glue off to one side, or straight in the middle. Make sure that the dowel is long enough that you can hold the mask in front of your face from a comfortable position with your hand. You can decorate your dowel by wrapping with ribbon or painting your favorite color.
For the mask, you can decorate in any way you like. Try covering the masks with aluminum foil or some type of iridescent cloth. You can glue beads or sequins around the eye holes and frame. Glue peacock feathers onto the corners. For inspiration, consult books in the library or use the internet to find pictures of interesting masks for masquerade ball. Have fun and use this keepsake masks for your next party or proudly display on your wall as decoration.
